Club rifles will be provided.

Schedule

Thursday, Sept 7

Registration closes at 8:00pm. 100 total entries, across all categories. NO day-of-race registration. (While not a requirement to participate, Craftsbury Annual Members save on their registration! Read more about membership.)

Saturday, Sept 9

8:00-9:00am - Bib pick-up
9:00-9:45am - Novice safety talk and clinic (required if using a club rifle)
9:30am - Zero (for the experienced category - those bringing a rifle: points 13-15)

10:30 - Noon - Running waves will start  (both novice and experienced category)

NOTE: The exact start schedule is TBD, based on number of entries. Check your pre-race email for more info, but be prepared that your wave's scheduled start can vary greatly depending on registration numbers.

Race format

All categories will complete a four stage biathlon race: lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap. So that’s starting with a lap, four shooting stages, and ending with a lap. For each miss, there will be a short penalty lap to complete before returning to the course. This will be an interval start for bikes, and a wave start for runners.

Novice category

For anyone not bringing their own rifle. Club rifles and ammo will be provided. All shooting will be in the prone (lying down) position, using a support block for the rifle. Targets will be set to standing (bigger) targets.

Experienced category

Anyone bringing their own rifle. Zero period before race as stated in schedule. Will shoot two prone stages on prone targets and then two standing stages on standing targets.

Courses

Running: 1k lap, ~5k total.

New this summer: This mini-camp for 13 and 14 year olds is a great way for budding biathletes and interested skiers to go all in for three days on biathlon training. A shorter intensive yet fun style of camp like this can not only solidify what athletes have learned at weekly practices but can also rapidly advance their skills in a way that weekly practices cannot.

Open to experienced biathletes and interested skiers with no biathlon experience alike!

Halloween Single Mixed Biathlon Relay

Biathletes: you're invited to our 2nd annual Halloween Mixed Relay! Sunday, October 30 Craftsbury Outdoor Center hosts the single mixed relay rollerski biathlon.

This is not a novice event. We will not be offering range instruction and will only be providing equipment to participants in our regular BKL/junior biathlon programs, other participants are expected to have all their own gear.

Teams of two can compete in one of these categories:

  • Mixed gender

  • Mixed distance

  • Mixed distance & gender

Costumes are highly recommended. Staggered mass start on penalty loop, seeded based on costume quality. (Costume quality will be judged, during zero, on overall appearance, coordination between teammates, creativity, and our discretion).

Each teammate will complete a total of 4 shooting stages in sets of two (prone, standing), alternating with their partner. Specifically:

Athlete1 - P, S, tag
Athlete2 - P, S, tag
Athlete1 - P, S, tag
Athlete2 - P,S, Finish

Up to 3 spare rounds can be used in each shooting stage.

For those who don't want to carry rifles on the Dino loop, rifle pick-up will be entering the range. All racers will need to ski the field loop carrying their rifle, and can drop it back off after they tag their partner.

Race Day Schedule:

9:00am - Bib Pickup
9:30am - Zero
10:15am - Race start

Distance/Courses:

2k Lap

The first athlete on each team will ski the Dino loop (~1.5km), shoot 5+3 shots prone, then ski the "field loop" (just around the solar panels, ~ 500m) and shoot 5+3 shots standing*, then tag. No Round-a-bits.

The second athlete will then do the same, and tag back off to the first athlete, who will then tag back off the second. The second athlete will ski one final field loop to the finish after their final shooting stage.

Kids or those who are uncomfortable skiing the Dino loop will instead ski the field loop for both of their laps.

*U13/U15 kids will shoot from the prone position for all stages, either with a block or cuff depending on ability.

Registration:

Online only, no DOR. This event is free. Each teammate must register individually. You will be asked for a team name and teammate name when registering. If you don't have a partner to race with please just indicate that in the 'teammate' field of your registration and we will work to get everyone paired up.

Results:

Will be on our webscorer results page.

Hope to see you here on Sunday Oct. 30th!
