Weekend notes - February 6-8

Racing: Friday-Sunday – UVM Carnival/Henchey Memorial Eastern Cup

Craftsbury is the venue for 3 days, two race weekend. This matters only in as much as the information for the events are spread across a number of locations. In the event that the brief summary below conflicts with the published information, the published information is authoritative. Given the dynamics of cold weather and forecasts, it’s likely that additional schedule shifts and other event changes will happen, so check the info below for the full scoop.

UVM carnival info (Friday-Saturday)
Bill Henchey Memorial Eastern Cup (Saturday-Sunday)

Schedule summary as of this post:

Friday – UVM Carnival – Classic sprint – 10:00am-1:40pm
Saturday – UVM/Eastern Cup – 5/10k Freestyle individual start – 10:00am-1:00pm
Sunday – Eastern Cup – 5/10k Classic mass start – 9:30am-1:30pm

Courses:

Friday – Dino Sprint
Saturday/Sunday – North 5k
Courses will be CLOSED to the public during racing. Trails used in courses will be noted on the conditions’ dashboard.

I want to get involved with the racing.

- Racing: Registration closed Thursday, so racing the events is not possible at this time.
- Volunteering: We have remaining open positions. It’s a great way to give back, meet folks in the ski and Craftsbury community and get close to the action – and get a lunch. Signup here.
- Spectating: Coaches’ Corner is a great location that allows you to see the racers go by twice without having to move.

I’m looking for a quieter side of Craftsbury.

- Avoid the very core trails: Courses this weekend use at most 5k of our currently 105k of trails. There will be lots of options to ski, but it may involve a slightly different way to get to your favorites while avoiding the racing. See maps of courses above.
- Satellite parking: Highly advisable approach to the weekend. Our non-campus parking locations let you access a different part of the trail system without any of the hubbub of main campus. See options here, and we’ve done a post that highlights much of what it takes to base out of your car.
- Come early or late: Racing happens right in the middle of the day. Either get out early – though grooming may or may not be done depending on what your early is – or show up in the afternoon. The afternoon is definitely likely to be warmer and a bit more relaxed. At the moment, showing up at 2:00pm would still give one several hours of daylight (5:05pm sunset these days), and the racing will be done.

Limited EV charging this weekend

The lower lot EV chargers will almost certainly be blocked all weekend by wax trailers. The remaining chargers in the upper lot will be available, but it may not be the time to count on a fill up. Got a friend with a hybrid you can car-pool with?

Limited Open Gym

Gym spaces are supporting volunteers and race infrastructure this weekend. Open gym members: double check the schedule before coming up.

No Fatbikes this weekend

Too many intersections with too many racers.

Charley’s Cabin

We’re working to have Charley’s Cabin open on Saturday. Stay tuned to the conditions’ dashboard.

Hedgehog Gear repair – Saturday, 10:00am-2:00pm

Hedgehog Mountain Gear Repair will be offering outdoor clothing and gear repairs at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center from 10:00am-2:00pm on Saturday, February 7th. Minor repairs such as zipper slider replacements, small patching, and restitching will be offered on the spot. More extensive repairs can also be dropped off at this time for pickup at a later date.

Coffee and goodies

Front and Center Café will be running Friday, Saturday and Sunday for all your pastry and caffeine needs. Find them in the main lodge of the Activity Center.
