Capacity: 12 athletes; please tell the office if you will be borrowing a rifle or bringing your own.

Lodging: Dorm-style housing at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center’s Cedar Lodge. Each athlete should expect to be paired with a roommate.

Coaches: Craftsbury and Green Racing Project biathlon coaches and athletes

Contact: biathlon@craftsbury.com

Purpose:

This camp for U17s is intended for both experienced biathletes and skiers looking to try the sport. We believe junior skiers interested in biathlon shouldn’t have to give up either their winter XC ski racing nor their summer ski training to experience biathlon training. Through collaborative sharing of ideas and knowledge, this camp will help athletes develop both shooting and ski skills. The week will end with a “fun race” for athletes to test their skills (although biathlon takes years of training to truly master!).

Requirements:

  • Equipment: Athletes must bring their own skate rollerskis, poles, boots, helmet, hydration vessel, and running gear. We recommend bringing classic rollerskis, boots, and poles as well. A mountain bike may be fun to bring for a solo recovery afternoon workout or two but the camp won’t have any structured mountain bike sessions. Craftsbury will provide each athlete a biathlon rifle and ammunition for the camp.

  • On-snow XC ski racing experience is required.

  • Significant experience training on rollerskis is required (2+ years of weekly rollerski training strongly recommended). Let us know if you have questions about this.

  • No biathlon or shooting experience is required. Camp is also open to athletes with some biathlon experience seeking to improve their fundamentals.

  • Athletes should be able to handle up to 2x/day 2-hour training sessions for 6 days.

  • Any questions are welcome - contact us at biathlon@craftsbury.com

Camp provides:

  • Access to international-level biathlon coaching, including rifle-fitting and firearm safety instruction, by Green Racing Project and Olympic biathletes and coaches

  • Rifle and ammunition for use during the week

  • Rollerski training on the Craftsbury Outdoor Center rollerski loop

  • Running/hiking/biking in the hills of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom

  • Strength training in the Craftsbury Outdoor Center’s “Event Shed” gym

  • Extracurricular activities including campfire, swimming and canoeing, team sports, and capture-the-flag

  • Video technique analysis

  • Mindset, mental strategy, and goal-setting session

  • Q and A with NCAA-All American and Olympic athletes

By the end of camp, each skier should:

  • Understand and practice the rules of firearm safety

  • Be able to care for and clean a biathlon rifle

  • Understand the fundamentals of prone and standing shooting positions

  • Be able to “zero” a rifle

  • Improve in their skate skiing technique

  • Understand the performance factors for cross-country skiing and the fundamentals of a basic training plan

  • Have experienced what it is like to train as a biathlete

  • Get a taste of what true biathlon competition is like, well beyond what is offered in a novice clinic

  • Be prepared to enter a biathlon race, for example at the US Biathlon Summer Rollerski Championships in Jericho, VT in early August

  • Be a little tired and ready for some R&R! It’s what happens when we train well!

Map

Experienced Race Schedule:

7:45-8:45am - Bib pick-up open for Experienced Race at event barn in the stadium

8:00-8:50am - Experienced Race Zero

9:00am - Experienced Race start (wave starts)

Novice Race Schedule:

9:00-10:00am Bib pick-up open for Novice Race at event barn in the stadium

10:00am Novice safety talk and clinic (required) at the shooting range

11:00am - Novice Race start (wave starts)

Bib pick-up

Please arrive early enough to pick up your bib at the event barn before your safety clinic (novice) or zero (experts). In addition, you will be given a race number sticker that should be worn during the race on the side of your leg, just below your right hip. Please stick this on when you are inside as it helps the adhesive work better.

Novices- If you are racing the novice race, you must attend the safety and instruction clinic at 10am. We recommend you wear gloves, not mittens, as you will need dexterity to squeeze the trigger and load magazines.

Experts- Please do not bring your rifles into the ski lodge. You can store them in the event barn.

Race course

The course is 5 loops of 1.4km for adults and 0.6km for kids (see map link above). Racers will start in waves. There will be a 75m penalty loop after the range.

Courses will remain open to the public during the race and all users must travel in the direction of race traffic. Maps are posted on the skireg page. We will likelytake a slight modification to the posted kids course to send racers up “pipeline” rather than “chip hill” between the fields since it is a little less steep.

If for some reason you do not finish the race, please let race officials know and return your bib to the finish line area.

Range

Novices will shoot 4 times, only on big targets.

All experts will shoot 2 times on small targets and 2 times on big targets. Range will be split roughly in the middle with higher points set to big targets and lower points set to small targets. There will be a divider but we might shift it around slightly based on how many shooters of each type we need to accommodate at a given time, so check for it each time you come in. If you are in the adult race, those second two shooting bouts will be from the standing position. If you are a kid, you shoot everything from the prone position.

Our range has 15 targets, which is smaller than a standard biathlon range size of 30. This means only 15 people can be shooting at once. We’ve done our best to configure start waves so that we do not overflow our range capacity, however it is possible we might overflow on occassion. If you come into the range in there is no point available, stay calm and raise your hand to let range officials know. We will give you a time credit based on how long you wait and you’ll benefit from a little extra recovery time.

Carrying/Not Carrying

Beginners will NOT ski with rifles. The rifles will live on shooting mats at all times.

Experts will ski with rifles, although we will make exceptions for several of the younger expert kids. After talking with several coaches from participating clubs we feel that this will make for a more positive and safe experience. In these cases, coaches will need to help shuttle their rifles. If you are in the expert kids race and unsure if you should be carrying a rifle or not, please check in with your coach and range officials during zero and we’ll create a plan.

Awards

We will have prizes for the top 3 from each category and will do an awards ceremony after each race gets completed. We will aim to have the experts podium happen during the novice clinic. Novice podium will happen as soon as results have been compiled after the last finisher.

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is excited to again partner with NENSA and Harvard University to bring a combined EISA Carnival-NENSA Eastern Cup event back to the trails at the Outdoor Center. Harvard hosted its inaugural EISA Carnival weekend at the Center back in 2020 and we are excited to have them back (and now led by the steady hand of new head coach Sam Benzing, a former Craftsbury Ski Club coaching assistant). Pairing a Carnival with an Eastern Cup creates an incredibly high caliber field, with all the top racers from New England and even eastern Canada looking to score FIS points.

Racing kicks off on Friday, February 2nd with 15km classic mass start races for the college field. Saturday, February 3rd brings 7.5km freestyle interval starts for all racers, allowing both the Carnival and Eastern Cup fields to test their mettle against the best of the best. The Carnival wraps up after Saturday's racing and Sunday, February 4th's Eastern Cup competitions will be held in the always-popular pursuit style, with U16s racing a 5km based on the previous day's time gaps, while the rest of the men's and women's field will race 10km based on their Saturday rank.

For more info and registration details, head on over to the Registration Page.

If you want to do our BKL race, head over to SkiReg to register for Bill’s Blastoff BKL Races.

Canadian Ski Marathon Presentation

Friday, December 15, join us at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center (COC) for an evening of the Canadian Ski Marathon (CSM). Mark Isselhardt of Elmore, Vermont has participated in the CSM nine times since 2014. Mark will share some basic information about the event as well as his own experiences traversing the special 160k trail that is only open once a year.

The Canadian Ski Marathon (CSM) is a ski tour, not a race: participants challenge not each other, but themselves by choosing a level of difficulty and trying to accomplish that goal. Since its inception in 1967 the event has taken place annually just north of the Ottawa River between the regions of Montreal and Ottawa, capital of Canada. The tour happens on the second weekend of February and usually covers a distance of 160 km (99 mi). There are many levels of participation in the CSM from “tasters” who ski one or two sections a day to "Coureur des bois" who attempt to ski all ten sections over the two days. Far more people take part in some but not all of the ten sections during the weekend and the event attracts participants of all ages and ski abilities.

This free event runs from 7:00-8:00pm in the COC Activity Center. Hope you'll join us!

Kick off your race season at the Outdoor Center

Saturday, Dec. 9 - Rodrigues Sprints - Register now at SkiReg.com

Sunday, Dec. 10 - Kendal Memorial freestyle mass start - Register now at SkiReg.com

We are excited to invite racers to the open the 2023 race season with us at the Outdoor Center. Whether you are a sprinter, a distance skier, or both, you can open your season with a fun, low-key race at the Outdoor Center. Freestyle “knock-in” sprints kick off the weekend on Saturday in honor of our friend and mentor Jim Rodrigues, while Sunday brings freestyle mass starts in memorial of longtime ski timer and friend Tom Kendall. A portion of Sunday’s race fees will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Saturday's format will be a repeat of last year’s popular Royal Court format (though we are referring to them as “knock-in” rounds now). After racing a qualifier on our updated FIS homologated sprint course just like a standard sprint, ALL competitors, regardless of age class or gender, will be seeded into 6-person heats based on their times. Qualifiers 1-6 will be in the first round, 7-12 in the second, and so on. Heats will go off every 3 minutes and competitors will be “knocked in” to different heats depending on their performance. If you finish top 2 in your heat, you move “up” to the next fastest heat. Middle two positions (3rd and 4th) will remain in the same heat, while finishers 5 and 6 will move down to the heat below. This way the heats are constantly reseeded based on how competitors are performing. Everyone will race three rounds. Prizes will be given to the top 3 skiers of each gender and then the top U18/20, U16, and BKL skiers of each gender. The qualifier will be scored to both the FIS and NRL points lists.

Saturday schedule

Note: Because a sprint day requires a qualifier followed by heats, setting the schedule requires knowing how many competitors we have racing in advance of race day. Thus, we cannot allow day-of-race registration for the sprint.

Sunday brings 10km and 5km freestyle mass starts in honor of the late Tom Kendall. The open (10km) races will be scored to the FIS and NRL points lists as well.

Canceled - Craftsbury Winter Duathlon

The Craftsbury Winter Duathlon has been canceled due to adverse course conditions and lack of interest.

For our multisport enthusiasts, we will also be offering a winter duathlon, part of USA Triathlon’s push to bring winter in the multisport fold. Racers will contest a 3km run, followed by a 5km ski, and finishing up with a 3km run. For more details, please head over to the 2023 Kendall Memorial Online Registration page on skireg.com.

Our post-race celebrations will center around a send-off for Footprint’s newest climate leaders. 2023 Singletrack Shootout #2

2023 Singletrack Shootout #2 - Run and Bike

Registration is live for the second Singletrack Shootout of the summer - September 9. Come give biathlon a try, no matter your experience level! It’ll be a fun morning of biathlon racing - running or mountain biking, your choice. A novice clinic will teach you everything you need to know to complete the four stage race. Club rifles will be provided.

Schedule

Thursday, Sept 7

Registration closes at 8:00pm. 100 total entries, across all categories. NO day-of-race registration. (While not a requirement to participate, Craftsbury Annual Members save on their registration! Read more about membership.)

Saturday, Sept 9

8:00-9:00am - Bib pick-up
9:00-9:45am - Novice safety talk and clinic (required if using a club rifle)
9:30am - Zero (for the experienced category - those bringing a rifle: points 13-15)

9:45 - Short Demo Race by GRP Biathletes
10:00am - Bike start (15 sec intervals)
10:30 - Noon - Running waves will start  (both novice and experienced category)

NOTE: The exact start schedule is TBD, based on number of entries. Check your pre-race email for more info, but be prepared that your wave's scheduled start can vary greatly depending on registration numbers.

Race format

All categories will complete a four stage biathlon race: lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap, shoot, lap. So that’s starting with a lap, four shooting stages, and ending with a lap. For each miss, there will be a short penalty lap to complete before returning to the course. This will be an interval start for bikes, and a wave start for runners.

Novice category

For anyone not bringing their own rifle. Club rifles and ammo will be provided. All shooting will be in the prone (lying down) position, using a support block for the rifle. Targets will be set to standing (bigger) targets.

Experienced category

Anyone bringing their own rifle. Zero period before race as stated in schedule. Will shoot two prone stages on prone targets and then two standing stages on standing targets.

Courses

Running: 1k lap, ~5k total.

Mountain Biking: 1.5k lap, ~7.5k total.

See both courses here.

Prizes

You betcha.

Claire Polfus will be leading a panel discussion with a group of local outdoor experts who will discuss how they interact with the natural world through recreation. This panel will be made up of speakers involved in summer athletics, winter athletics and hunting and angling. Our speakers will touch on how the Vermont economy is shifting from an agriculture focused economy to an outdoor recreation focused one, and how this change will bring different stressors to our local environment.

  • Google Calendar ICS

New this summer: This mini-camp for 13 and 14 year olds is a great way for budding biathletes and interested skiers to go all in for three days on biathlon training. A shorter intensive yet fun style of camp like this can not only solidify what athletes have learned at weekly practices but can also rapidly advance their skills in a way that weekly practices cannot.

Open to experienced biathletes and interested skiers with no biathlon experience alike!
